New Year's Diary

January 1st, 2022

Today is New Year's Day, and it's the start of a brand new year. I woke up early this morning feeling excited for the day ahead. The first thing I did was to call my family and wish them a happy new year. Even though we couldn't be together physically, it was nice to hear their voices and share the joy of the new year.

After the phone call, I prepared a traditional Chinese breakfast to celebrate the new year. I made dumplings and tangyuan, which are rice balls filled with sweet sesame paste. It was a bit challenging to make them perfectly, but the effort was worth it when I saw the joy on my face as I took the first bite.

In the afternoon, I decided to visit a local temple to pray for a prosperous year ahead. There were many people there, all dressed in their best clothes. The atmosphere was vibrant, with the sound of firecrackers and the smell of incense filling the air. I made a wish for good health and success in my studies for the coming year.

In the evening, I joined a virtual gathering with my friends to celebrate the new year. We played games, shared our resolutions, and laughed a lot. It was a different way of celebrating, but it brought us closer despite the distance between us.

As the day came to an end, I reflected on the past year and felt grateful for all the experiences and lessons learned. Although there were challenges, I grew stronger and more resilient. I realized that the new year is not just about setting resolutions, but also about appreciating the present moment and cherishing the people around us.

Overall, it was a wonderful New Year's Day filled with love, good food, and meaningful connections. I look forward to the year ahead and all the opportunities it will bring.

Celebrating Lunar New Year

February 12th, 2022

Today is Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year. It's one of the most important holidays for Chinese people around the world. The preparations for this special day started weeks ago, with cleaning the house, buying new clothes, and decorating with red lanterns and couplets.

In the morning, my family and I gathered around the dining table to have a big reunion breakfast. We enjoyed traditional dishes such as niangao (sticky rice cake), jiaozi (dumplings), and fish, which symbolize prosperity and good luck. It was a time for us to bond and share stories while savoring the delicious food.

After breakfast, we set off firecrackers outside the house to ward off evil spirits and welcome good fortune. The loud bangs and bright sparks filled the air, adding to the festive atmosphere. We also exchanged red envelopes, known as "hongbao," which contain money as a symbol of good luck and blessings for the new year.

In the afternoon, we visited our relatives and friends to exchange greetings and well wishes. It was a time to catch up with loved ones and show respect to our elders. We shared laughter, stories, and delicious snacks, such as melon seeds and dried fruits. The feeling of warmth and togetherness was palpable everywhere we went.

In the evening, we gathered again for a lavish dinner. The table was filled with a variety of dishes, each with its own symbolic meaning. We enjoyed delicacies such as longevity noodles, which represent a long and prosperous life, and whole steamed fish, which symbolizes abundance and surplus.

As the night went on, we watched the spectacular fireworks display illuminating the sky. The vibrant colors and mesmerizing patterns brought a sense of joy and excitement. It was a magical moment, filled with hope and anticipation for the year ahead.

As I lay in bed, reflecting on the day's festivities, I felt a deep sense of gratitude for my family, traditions, and cultural heritage. Lunar New Year is not just about celebrating, but also about cherishing our roots and passing on our customs to future generations.
